Overview
The Cricket Ball Visibility tool is a research project of the University of Sussex. For the purpose of this website, the University of Sussex is the data controller and is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) as a data controller under registration reference Z6428144.
The Data Protection Officer for the University of Sussex is the Head of Information Management and Compliance. If you have any queries about your personal data, you can contact them at [email protected].
This notice should be read alongside the University of Sussex privacy notice, which covers general data protection practices at the University.
The basis for processing your personal data
The University processes personal data relating to this site on the basis of our public task — the purpose of the University is to advance learning and knowledge through research and teaching, and this tool forms part of that research activity. Where we process data on a different basis (for example, consent for contact form submissions), this is stated below.
Personal data we collect and how we use it
Contact form. When you submit the contact form, we collect your name, email address, organisation (if provided), user type, and the content of your message. This data is stored on University infrastructure and used only to respond to your enquiry. Submission is on the basis of your explicit consent, which you provide by ticking the consent checkbox on the form.
Usage analytics. We record anonymised events as you use the tool — page views, visualiser configurations explored, and form submissions. Each event is associated with a one-way hashed identifier derived from your IP address and browser, which cannot be reversed to identify you. No personal data beyond this hashed identifier is stored alongside events.
Account data. If you have been granted an account for enhanced access, we store your name, email address, and password (hashed) to allow you to log in.
Retention of personal data
Contact form submissions are retained for up to three years from the date of submission, after which they are deleted unless an ongoing working relationship requires us to keep them longer.
Usage analytics events are retained in aggregated form indefinitely for the purpose of understanding how the tool is used and to inform future research. Individual events older than two years may be deleted.
Account data is retained for as long as the account is active, and deleted on request or on withdrawal of access.
Disclosure of personal data
We will only disclose your personal data to a third party when required to by law, where we have your specific consent, or where appropriate data sharing arrangements are in place.
We use a small number of third-party services to run this site — in particular, a transactional email service to send password reset and notification emails. Where we use such a service, we ensure that appropriate contractual arrangements are in place to maintain data protection standards.
Your rights
You have a number of rights under UK GDPR, including the right to access, rectify, or delete personal data we hold about you, to restrict or object to processing, and to data portability. Further information is available on the ICO's website.
To exercise any of these rights, please use the contact form on this site, or contact the University of Sussex Data Protection Officer at [email protected].
Cookies
This site uses only strictly necessary cookies — specifically, a session cookie that maintains your login status if you have an account. We do not use tracking cookies, third-party analytics, or advertising cookies.

This site links to external websites (such as journal publishers and the University of Sussex). We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites, and we encourage you to review their privacy notices separately.
